PERRY, Carl Wesley

Passed away peacefully at Riverview Manor, on Sunday, February 28, 2010 in his 94th year. Beloved husband of Mary (nee Condon). Pre-deceased by former wife Ruth (nee Bawden). Father of Michael and Bonnie of British Columbia and step-father of Richard C.D. and Tina O'Connor of Bowmanville, Julie Birkin C.D. of Kingston, Barry of Peterborough, Linda and Jason Hayward of Edmonton and Laurie and Jason Ashton of Toronto. Grandpa to Stephanie and Katherine, Meghan and Courtney, Ashley and Matthew, Kathie, Carter and Caden. Carl will be sadly missed by his many friends, sisters and brothers-in-law. Carl Perry was born at the settlement of Falkenburg in Muskoka, Ontario, a short distance north of the town of Bracebridge, and grew up on the family homestead near Foote's Bay. The youngest of eleven siblings, he was cared for and raised by the older brothers and sisters (all deceased) having lost his mother at the age of two years. Early in the Second World War, Carl enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Canada at the Fort York Armoury in Toronto, and went throught basic training at Camp Borden. After spending many months on manouvers in Scotland and throughout Britain, he went into battle in the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942, along with 6000 other Canadian troops. He was among the 3623 men who were either killed, wounded or captured in the notorious debacle. Having survived a nearly fatal wound and two years in Stalag VIIIB he was finally repatriated in 1944 and returned to Toronto and his wife Ruth. Carl resumed domestic life, although still convalescing and grew wonderful dahlias and roses in the family home on Rushton Rd. Son Michael has found memories of cottaging and fishing on Kasshabog Lake where Carl and Ruth retired in 1968. After Ruth's death in 1975, Carl continued to live at the lake for several years but moved to Brechin to a modest hobby farm to be near his only then surving sister Charlotte. A re-kindled social life led Carl to a senior singles dance in Lindsay where he met Mary. Carl and Mary were married on January 29, 1993 and lived happily together in Peterborough for 17 years. Carl loved to cook and entertain. Mary would like to thank the Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Riverview Manor for the excellent care and support from the doctors, staff, homecare givers and the Department of Veteran's Affairs.

Visitation at DUFFUS FUNERAL HOME, 431 George Street South from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral Service in the DUFFUS CHAPEL on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in Sacred Heart Church Parish Hall. Spring Interment Pine Grove Cemetery, Havelock.
