Obituary

WALSH, Hilda Mary (nee LYNCH) September 4, 1917- November 1, 2018

After a long and happy life, Hilda slipped away peacefully at the age of 101 with her family at her side.  Hilda was the much-loved mother of Mary Olaveson (John) of Oshawa, ON, and Catherine Walsh-McInnis (Tom) of Douro, ON. Cherished grandmother of Kelly (Jason), Guelph, ON; Erik (Melissa), Toronto, ON); and Rob, Peterborough, ON and Sarah, Wolfville, NS. Treasured great-grandmother of Brennan, Lila and Connor.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and their children. Hilda was predeceased by her husband of thirty-six years, James Walsh, her parents Martin Lynch and Margaret (Kennelly), and ten extraordinary brothers and sisters: Tim, Lorne, Lila (J.J. Foran), Father John, Sister Mary Perpetua (Irene), Sister Martina (Veronica), Marguerite (J.P. English), Pat (Zena), Jim (Theresa), Howard (Louise) and Harry (Agnes) as well as brothers-in-law Raymond Walsh (Rita) and Father Joseph Walsh.

Hilda loved family, faith, music and community.  She treasured her entire family but she was particularly proud of her grandchildren and was always happy to see them to catch up on their latest adventures. She was a woman of great faith, a member of St. Joseph's Parish, Douro and a member of the CWL for over 60 years. She had a great love of music and always made sure that it was a big part of family celebrations. Hilda began her teaching career in 1937 in the Renfrew area. She left Mount St. Patrick in 1950, and enjoyed a career as a teacher first at St. Alphonsus and finally at her beloved St. Joseph's Elementary School in Douro, ON. She loved her community in Douro, but always held a special place in her heart for Mount St. Patrick, ON where she grew up.

The family appreciates the kindness of many people in Hilda's last years of life. Special appreciation is extended to the caring staff who work at Pleasant Meadow Manor in Norwood, and to St. Paul's Parish, Norwood. In addition, heartfelt gratitude goes to the kind and caring people at Lakefield Extendicare who showed such warmth and attentiveness to Hilda during her final years and who were exceptionally compassionate during her final days. Thank you also goes to the Eucharistic Ministers at St. Paul's Church, Lakefield and finally to Father Leo Coughlin whose visits and prayers were of such comfort to Hilda.

Visitation will occur at DUFFUS FUNERAL HOME, 431 George Street South, Peterborough, 705-745-4612 from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. (Parish prayers at 5 p.m.) Sunday November 4, 2018. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH, DOURO AT 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 5, 2018.  Interment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Douro.
