De MARCHI, Lina

In the arms of family, Lina passed away peacefully with courage, grace and dignity at Union Villa in Markham, Ontario on March 30, 2026 in her 91st year. She was the daughter of the late Aurelio and Irma Peron. Beloved and cherished wife of the late Raimondo, Angelo De Marchi for 62 years. Loving and proud mother of John Joseph De Marchi, Anna De Marchi (Geoffrey Miller) and her late infant son Gianni. Cherished Nonna to Adrian and Stefan. Loved and missed by her sisters: Maria (late Eugenio), Rita, Romana (Armando), Udilla (Bernardo) and brothers, Mario (Carmela) and Romano (Luisa). Predeceased by her sisters Amelia (late Erminio) and Gabriella (late Bruno), and Giovanna. Beloved sister in law to Ivana De Marchi (late Ercole).

Lina was known for her kind heart, quiet thoughtfulness, generosity and exemplary work ethic; always putting her family's needs before her own. Lina was best known for cooking delicious meals and as a skilled seamstress; learning to sew at the age of nine during the war.  Many volunteer hours were spent sewing altar table cloths, clergy and altar boy vestments for St. Anne's Parish, as well as bridal attire and clothes for family and friends. Lina volunteered her time through the Catholic Women's League visiting hospitalized parishioners, contributing to parish events, as well as at the Brock Street Mission. She was a skilled quilter and again volunteered countless hours hand stitching quilts for St. Anne's raffles. Anything Lina sewed or stitched was a work of art. Family knew that Lina was also regarded as the family historian; never forgetting distant family members names, hometowns, stories and birthdays. If anyone ever had family questions about old Italy, Lina was the best source of historical family information.

Lina was born in 1935 in the small town of Piombino, Dese in northern Italy. The second eldest in a family with 10 siblings, and being the quiet maternal type, she helped raise the 8 children that followed her. Domestic skills were learned early in pre and post war Italy. In 1952  Lina met the love of her life, Angelo. She waited for Angelo's return from Canada for 2 years when he set off in 1955 to forge a new life for them.  In 1957, having secured a job, car and home,  he returned and they married in Italy.  They set out a month later on a trans Atlantic journey to start their adventure and life together. Over the next 60 years Lina and Angelo literally built a Canadian life, family and loving home.

Lina's family would like to thank the many dedicated Personal Support Workers, nurses, recreational therapists, physiotherapists, spiritual care team, housekeeping staff and physicians who provided compassionate care and a rich quality of life for her at Union Villa, Markham Stouffville Hospital and at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre over the past 4 years.

The special staff at Union Villa will forever be fondly remembered as part of our family; their care has been beyond exceptional.

Thank you Mamma for teaching me everything. I am a fraction of the person you are. Know that you are loved, immensely missed,  and we take comfort in knowing that you are now at peace and walking arm in arm with Papa.

Visitation at DUFFUS FUNERAL HOME, 431 George Street South from 6-8 pm. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Funeral Mass at ST. ANNE'S CHURCH on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. Reception following the mass at St. Anne's Parish Hall. Interment after the reception at St. Peter's Cemetery.
