SWEENEY, Reverend Brian John Gerard, Retired - Roman Catholic Diocese of Peterborough, died on April 7, 2015. "Teach Me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge"

Father Sweeney was born October 10, 1941 in Toronto, ON. Beloved son of James and Madeleine (Holding) Sweeney, both deceased; much loved brother of James Jr. and Shirley (deceased) Sweeney, and Marlene (Sweeney) and James LaPointe. Father Sweeney was loved and admired by his nieces and nephews, James & Toni, Larry & Wendy, Michael (deceased), Laura & Louis, Brian & Judy, Kerry & Zoltan, Patrick & Leann; and many great nieces and nephews. Father Sweeney attended the University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, graduating on May 29, 1964. He was ordained a priest of the Congregation of St. Basil (Basilian Fathers) December 12, 1970 in St. Basil's Church, Toronto, ON by Cardinal George B. Flahiff, CSB. He celebrated his first Mass the next day in St. Dunstan's Church, Toronto. Father Sweeney's appointments included Basilian Fathers of St. Charles College, Sudbury, ON; St. Mary's College, Sault Ste. Marie, ON; and St. Michael's College School, Toronto, ON where he taught and served as Athletic Director; Basilian Fathers of Kelowna, Kelowna, BC where for 7 years he was Principal of Immaculata High School; and St. Basil's Seminary, Toronto, ON where he served as Superior. He withdrew from the Congregation of St. Basil and was accepted into the Diocese of Peterborough in 1992. Father Sweeney worked with the PVNC Catholic District School Board as Chaplain and then Department Head for Religion & Life at St. Mary's Secondary School (Cobourg) and finally Curriculum Consultant with the Board until his retirement in June of 2000.
